Assignment 15: What? This is personal image assignment. Photographing six separate images to represent the following questions about yourself. Once images are shot you must edit them and place them all into a grid format gallery on your portfolio.

What intrigues me?
What revolts me?
What gives me hope?
What do I question?
What do I love?
Really think about these. You can only use one image for each so make sure each image is clear. In your portfolio give the reason you chose each subject for your photographs. If possible think about how you can use composition to accentuate the subject you are shooting and explain why you took the picture the way you did.
Assignment 16: Themed Images You will have the option to choose between two projects for this assignment. Option #1 You are to choose a theme, something that you have access to and can gather relatively easily. You must take a set of either 4 images or 6 images that revolve around this theme. (see examples below). Option #2 You are to create a Triptych of (3) images that revolve around the same theme. This collection of images should evoke a feeling, an emotion or tell a story. The three images need to be combined into one document using Photoshop. (see below)
In your portfolio write a reflection about the assignment,
Why did you choose your subject?
Was it easy to find 4-6 examples of your theme?
What technical things did you learn?
Create a gallery and place all 6 images into the gallery.
Assignment 17: Double Image Story: Take 2 images that have some connection in theme or story. One image is to become the background and the other to be set in front. Combine both images in Photoshop. Make sure to make any edits or corrections to both images. The subject choice is yours.

Influential Photographers. Henri Catrier-Bresson "The decisive moment refers to capturing an event that is ephemeral and spontaneous, where the image represents the essence of the event itself."
Research Henri Cartier-Bresson. Write a paragraph in your own words describing his work, style and how he has influenced the word of photography. Place this into your ePortfolio.

You are to use this idea and photograph life around you. Gather between one and five images that tell a story. I am not looking for you to stage a situation to tell the story, I want it to be a natural situation that is unfolding around you. Anyone who looks at the images should be able to see that there is something going on, a situation, a action, an experience that shows life as it is happening.
Proper camera techniques are important, composition and exposure will always enhance your images. Don't just take one image and think you are done. Try several, give yourself a selection to choose from to find your perfect story. These can be a sequential set of images, a set of images that revolve around a situation or just one image that says it all.

Assignment 21: Environmental Portrait An environmental portrait, also called a location portrait, uses a person's surroundings to tell more about that person. Sometimes this environment is directly connected to who they are—it's that person's home, place of work or community. Other times the environment has little or no connection but helps create a mood that contributes to an understanding of that person. Great portraits capture the soul and spirit of your subject.
You are to photograph at least one environmental portrait. This is NOT and one shot and you are done assignment. When taking photos in these situations you must take several images to make sure the best photo is captured, all is in focus, composition is correct. exposure is proper and that you most importantly capture the essence of the individual or people you are representing in you photo.
This is meant to get you out and interactive with people in your area who you might not know. Preferably not a student or faculty/teacher on campus.
One final image must be edited and corrected and posted on your portfolio.
Some things to think about when making environmental portraits.
1. What are some characteristics of a strong environmental portrait? The environment shouldn't overpower the person. You want to show who the person is, not use the person as a prop.
2. How do you keep the background from being "busy"? A picture composed of only meaningful elements will probably not feel busy. Ideally each element of the background contributes something to the portrait. That doesn't mean the frame has to be simplified. There could still be a lot going on.
3. What makes a shoot successful? Have you ever had a shoot that went horribly wrong? With assignment work, a successful shoot is one that produces images that the editor can use well for the story. I'm not shooting for my own enjoyment (though I am usually enjoying myself); I'm shooting for my editor and for the story. I haven't had a shoot go horribly wrong, but mistakes really burn at me for a while afterward, so I've learned to do everything I can to get things right. Knowing I missed an opportunity is a burden.
4. How do you get your subjects to loosen up? Most of the time it's by engaging the person in conversation, but sometimes people who don't care to converse are reassured by me being in control of the situation, by being professional and clear about what I need.
You are to incorporate yourself (full body) into a classic piece of art. This is a Photoshop assignment.
Use your layers and make it look like you belong in the image, like you were really there as a character in the painting. Beware of colors, textures and where the light is.
Assignment 23: Architecture.
Architecture is a very viable and strong segment of commercial photography. It has its own language and challenges, and as well, its own total niche. Your assignment is to fully document an historical building in our town, or the newest building in our area. Yeah, the time of year may not be the best for your specific region, but it is what it is. Consider that part of the challenge if you will. Whether you choose historical or new is your choice. We need one overall shot and 2-4 closeups. I only want you to submit the overall shot, and one of the detail shots (yes, you can show more if you are a classic overachiever… heh). I will caution you that this is not simply a drive up and click shoot. This shot has to be amazing. It has to be as well crafted as a still life. You can light it or not, shoot it at night if that is best, do HDR if that helps, or get up in the wee hours to catch that early morning light. I would imagine that scouting the shot before actually committing would be a good idea. You may even go back to the building in different times of day. If you do not have a new or historical building, shoot the library or the town offices or the post office or whatever cool building you have there in your town. This is a case of studying the building and the light, figuring the best lens choice and time of day. Then MAKE this shot awesome.

Using photoshops layers and painting tools you can add color to images to bring them back to life or to give the illusion that they were photographed with color film. You are not to use a color photograph / turn it to black and white and then add color back.
